Free Backup Checkup
Around this time of year, every year, we encourage all our clients to have an IT spring clean to delete, archive and backup un-used data. This is also a perfect time to check and test your backups.
Do you have daily backups in place? Do they work?
Although we endeavour to check the backup when we visit you (our existing customers), it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure the backups are working properly.
We want to make sure your files are as safe as they can be, so we’re offering a Free Backup Checkup for both new and existing clients of ours. We can do this with you remotely while you’re on the phone and it will normally take between 10-15 minutes.
We hope all of you take advantage of this offer by emailing: backup@theengineroom.co.uk or calling 08456 447758
Our Backup Checkups are very popular, so we recommend getting in early as we run them on a first come first serve basis.

PC Stuck in a startup loop?
It appears that Microsoft, bless, have released an update for Windows XP & Vista that is keeping some PCs stuck in the startup process. i.e. your PC boots to the Splash Screen and then reboots itself. Then it goes on forever until you pull the plug.
If this happens to you, you will have to start the PC in Safe Mode (F8 just after Start Up normally), start System Restore and roll back to before the last Update. Then turn off Automatic Updates for a while until MS have sorted their stuff out (Give it a few weeks).
If this means nothing to you just give us a call on 08456 447758 or email helpme@theengineroom.co.uk

Dell's MacBook Air rival launched
Dell has finally launched its widely-trailed rival to the MacBook Air. Dubbed Adamo, the laptop lays claim to the Air’s title of “world’s thinnest laptop”, measuring 0.65in at its thinnest point – although it is slightly thicker near the hinge.

Like the MacBook, the aluminium casing is constructed from a single piece of metal. The Adamo comes in two colours: “onyx” black and metallic “pearl”. The luxury system is unlikely to be competing for shelf space alongside the rest of the Dell models in Tescos. Gone are the carboard boxes, in comes a transparent perspex display case with separate compartments for the laptop and power supply – a sign that Dell is adopting Apple’s approach to packaging as well as laptop design.
So what’s inside the laptop itself? There’s 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U9300 processor, integrated Intel X4500 graphics, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 128GB SSD.
The display is a 13.4in 16:9 HD display with edge-to-edge glass, with Dell claiming “preliminary” battery life in excess of five hours. The Adamo also boasts 802.11n wireless and will include a 3G mobile broadband option.
There’s no optical drive, although the company will offer an external DVD+/-RW or Blu-ray disc drive as part of its range of matching accessories.
It’s hardly a cutting-edge spec, although it certainly has a top-end price: $1,999 in the US. UK pricing has yet to be announced, but it will be a huge surprise if it comes in any cheaper than £1,500.
The Adamo will go on sale worldwide from 26 March.

Most Useful iPhone Apps
Us here at The Engine Room are a mixed and odd bunch. Most of us have iPhones and use them for both work and play in mixed and odd ways. In this blog we cover a few of the more sane iPhone applications we use on a daily basis. All these applications are available to download for FREE here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/appstore.html at time of writing.
First up we have MyRail Lite. It’s an essential application for people living in or around London who commute into work via train. It displays an exact duplicate of the platform timetable display for any given station including departure time, arrival time, platform number and all stops and times on the way to your destination. The only time I’ve seen it misbehave is when the actual station is having trouble with it’s timetables too.

Next we have TwitterFon. It’s a neat little iPhone app for reading and updating your Twitter account if you have one. It’s nicely laid out and very simple to use. You can follow twitter links and scroll through recent friends’ twitters on the move.
One of my favorites is the apple Remote application for iTunes. It allows you to use your iPhone or iPod as a remote control for your iTunes. Provided your iPhone or iPod are on the same wireless network as your computer with iTunes on it then you can search, play, skip and adjust the volume of your music in real-time.
For those of you who are forever correcting leaning pictures on the wall or the tech savvy carpenter this little tool will come in handy. Aptly named the iHandy Level, it users the iPhone’s inbuilt motion sensors and displays a very accurate spirit level.
The last little tool is more of a toy. It’s called RJDJ and users your iPhone’s microphone to sample sounds from around you and turn them into a spacial sound-scape you can manipulate by touching the phone’s screen.
Superfast Solid State Drives Are The Future!
A few off the wall experiments show how you don’t need expensive advertising to promote a new product like the new Samsung SSD drives.
The video shows the supercomputer opening every program in Microsoft Office 2003 in half a second, while during another experiment it copies a DVD from one drive to another in a shorter time than it takes for the DVD to hit the ground after being dropped out of The Viral Factory’s office window.
The video also shows the “recycling” of every speech that George Bush ever made, about six gigabytes worth, instantly.
The Viral Factory’s creatives have been shown a thing or two by their IT manager after his short film about Samsung’s new hard drive racked up 1m views and nearly 1,000 largely positive comments on YouTube.

New customer? Why don't you BOGOF?
Buy 1 hour and get the next free!
Last week we quizzed a selection of potential clients. Nearly all were worried about cash and we are no different.
This downturn has really given us a kick in the backside to smarten up our act, sharpen up our internal processes and think about marketing which has been a great thing to do.
Our main man Brent came up with an idea to attract new customers. He denies it, but we think his inspiration came from the back of a pizza box.
The offer stands for 1 month and applies to new customers only:
Buy one hour and get one free!!!
Terms apply obviously but great news if you want to get that server installed on the cheap.
